The Ultimate RoadToEV Guide to EV Chargers: Which One Should You Actually Buy?

There was a time when buying an EV charger was a piece of cake. Today's home EV charging market has several different brands and standards all wanting a piece of the pie.

It's like a CES convention. Regular chargers, smart chargers, solar-compatible chargers, portable chargers and even Tesla chargers that work with non-Teslas.

This is a good thing, btw. Because the right charger does more than just power your EV. It shapes your ownership experience, affects your charging speed, your electricity bill, and even your ability to earn money by hosting on RoadToEV.

So, we thought we'd do a deep dive on the different EV chargers, and which ones are worth your attention in 2026.

First: The 3 Main Types of EV Charging

Before we talk brands, let's talk basics. The three charging categories.

Level 1 Charging

This is the charger that plugs into a regular household outlet. It's basic, slow and it gives emergency backup vibes. You can expect 5–8 km of range per hour.

Pros

  • No installation needed
  • Works almost anywhere
  • Great as a backup charger

Cons

  • Painfully slow
  • Not realistic for most daily drivers
  • Tough in winter climates

Best For

  • Plug-in hybrids
  • Emergency/travel backup

Level 2 Charging

This is the sweet spot for most EV owners. With a 240V connection, it dramatically increases charging speeds. Most add 30–70 km of range per hour depending on amperage and EV compatibility.

If you own an EV and have a driveway, Level 2 is the way to go. This is what RoadToEV hosts use.

Pros

  • Fast enough for overnight charging
  • Ideal for daily EV ownership
  • Great for hosting and monetization

Cons

  • Requires installation
  • Costs more upfront

Best For

  • Almost everyone

DC Fast Charging

These are fast chargers that top up your car (20% to 80%) in about 1 hour. These are generally public infrastructure. Think highway chargers, road trips and I-forgot-to-charge-last-night situations.

Benefits

  • Extremely fast
  • Essential for long-distance travel

Drawbacks

  • Expensive infrastructure
  • Higher charging costs
  • More battery stress over time
  • Not realistic for homes since the amperage required is much higher than the amperage supplied for the full house.

Best For

  • Public charging networks
  • Fleets
  • Highway corridors

The Best Home Charger in 2026

There're a plethora of brands available and many new brands are being added almost daily, so there're many options to choose from. Most of them have similar capabilities. Small note: As North America is moving towards NACS (Tesla Adapter) even for non-tesla vehicles, it would be best to future proof yourself with a single charger that does it all.

Tesla Universal Wall Connector

Tesla made one of the smartest moves by making its Universal Wall Connector compatible with non-Teslas.

Benefits

  • Robust hardware
  • Supports NACS and J1772
  • Strong load-sharing capabilities (if you decide to have more than one charger at home)
  • Clean design
  • Great Tesla ecosystem integration
  • For additional charger capabilities, connect the charger to local Wifi network and your Tesla account (Tesla account can be used with charger only or vehicle(s) and charger(s))

Drawbacks

  • Hardwired installation only (best to connect directly to electrical panel in your home)
  • Some advanced features work best for Teslas

Best For

  • Tesla households
  • Mixed-EV homes
  • Future-proofing

Portable Chargers

Portable L2 chargers are useful for travel and flexibility, but not for daily home use. A permanently installed wall unit (hardwired) is safer, faster and more reliable.

Portable chargers work best as:

  • Backup chargers
  • Cottage/travel solutions
  • Emergency gear

Generally your EV manufacturer would give you a portable charger with the vehicle.

Hardwired vs Plug-In

We're settling this debate once and for all…

Plug-In Chargers

Pros

  • Easier installation
  • Portable
  • Easier to replace

Cons

  • Lower max amperage
  • Outlet wears over time

Hardwired Chargers

Pros

  • Faster charging
  • Cleaner installation
  • Better long-term reliability

Cons

  • Less portable
  • More expensive installation

Most EV experts lean toward hardwired, especially for long-term hosting on RoadToEV.

Your Charger Can Make Money

Here's something many EV owners don't realize: your charger is an asset that can earn you money.

By listing your charger on RoadToEV, you can offset electricity costs and recoup installation expenses. You can also support community charging access and help nearby EV drivers, which means you can also get that help from others.

And because millions of chargers sit idle most of the day, sharing them simply makes sense. Especially in condos, apartment-heavy neighborhoods, and urban areas where charging access remains limited.

Through RoadToEV you can also earn up to CAD 400 a year through the carbon credits program. RoadToEV requires connectivity with a charger in order to provide you with carbon credits. Simply connect your Tesla Universal Wall Connector to Wifi, register the charger on your Tesla account and add your Tesla account on the RoadToEV app.

Final Thoughts

The best charger isn't necessarily the most expensive one. It's the one that fits your driving habits, home setup, climate conditions and your long-term EV plans. Because once home charging works smoothly, EV ownership becomes smooth and effortless.

And once you realize your charger can also help power the wider EV community through RoadToEV, you understand its value in the future.
